K-State Stumbles at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, South Dakota (Kansas State Athletics) – For the first time this season, K-State was unable to get on the scoreboard, as South Dakota State moved its unbeaten streak at Fishback Soccer Park to 37 straight games winning 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats fall to 4-4-1 on the season while the Jackrabbits are now 6-0-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
– Scoreless at halftime, South Dakota State secured its first goal of the afternoon in the 50th minute. Maya Hansen hit a left-footed shot from the top right corner of K-State’s 18-yard box. The ball found its mark in the upper left corner for the 1-0 lead.
– The goal by the Jackrabbits ended K-State and junior goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer’s consecutive shutout streak at 295:34.
– South Dakota State added an insurance goal in the 65th minute. The Jackrabbits played a long ball over the K-State defense. As K-State defender Jazmin Brown attempted to play the ball, South Dakota State’s Cece Limongi clipped Brown’s heel and sent her to the turf. Limongi then dribbled into free space and scored into the open Wildcat net, as Werremeyer tried to cut down Limongi’s angle.
– Kansas State saw their school record consecutive games with a goal streak end at eight matches.

– South Dakota State held a 16-8 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 lead in shots on goal.
– The Jackrabbits also tallied a 14-1 margin in corner kicks.

“We had some chances today. They were a very good team and you could tell that they’re very tough and very good at home. We just didn’t do enough today against a very good team, but we competed hard. They capitalized on their chances and we didn’t it.”
On the team at the conclusion of the non-conference schedule…
“I think there’s a lot of positives, even though we’re .500. You look at the quality of the opponents we’ve played that our losses have come against and those program all have winning records and are doing well. We have learned a lot from all those matches and I think we’re prepared for the Big 12. We need to continue to grind and to continue to chip away and we’ll be fine.”
