K-State Place 11th in Season Opener
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Kansas State Athletics) – The Kansas State women’s golf team closed out the Dick McGuire Invitational with a 12-over par 300 final round on Tuesday to finish in 11th place at 34-over par 898 on the par-72, 6,354-yard UNM Championship Course.
“We started out well and got it under par. Unfortunately we could not keep that momentum,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “We lost 12 shots out of the last seven or eight holes, but the team battled.”
Leading K-State in the standings was Manon Donche-Gay, who registerd a 3-over par 75 third round to tie for 42nd place at 7-over par 223.
A pair of Wildcats — Haley Vargas and Gabriela McNelly — tied for 49th place at 9-over par 225. Vargas ended her tournament with a 2-over par 74 final round, while McNelly shot a 4-over par 76.
Next on the leaderboard was Napua Glossner. She fired her second 3-over par 75 round of the event in the third round and tied for 67th at 12-over par 228.
Remington Isaac shot a 5-over par 77 final 18 as she tied for 73rd place at 13-over par 229.
Ohio State ran away with the team championship at 11-under par 853, while Mayka Hoogeboom of Kent State hung on to win the individual title with an 8-under par 208.
The Wildcats are hoping to take the experience gained at the season opener forward into the rest of their fall slate.
“Sometimes it is tough to see the positive when you finish a round like that,” said Knight. “It will be important to take a step back and see the good and take a hard look at how we can keep that momentum the next time.”
Kansas State will be right back in action September 20-21 at the Mo’Morial, hosted by Texas A&M in Bryan, Texas.
