Ten More Wildcats Score to Wrap Up Big 12 Championship

The men’s team claims 10th place, the women finish 11th in team standings

WACO, Texas (K-State Athletics) – K-State track and field wrapped up the Big 12 Championship on Saturday (May 11) with the third day of competition at Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium with eight more podium finishes, including the men’s 4×400 relay, for 19 conference medalists.

After encountering another short weather delay, the teams competed in 21 events, the K-State men finished 10^th with 35 points while the women collected 37 points in 11^th place in the team standings. Texas swept the men’s and women’s championship with 150 points for the women’s team, the men’s team with 134 points.

The Wildcats earned four medals just from high jump performances– in the men’s event, sophomore Aaron Antoine and junior Marcus Gelpi both cleared a height of 2.14m/7-0.25, finishing 5^th and 7^th, respectively. In the women’s high jump, sophomore Sharie Enoe and junior Vanessa Mercera both cleared a height of 1.76m/5-9.25, for 6^th and 7^th place.

Senior Devon Richardson competed in two events during the day, the high jump with a 13^th place height of 2.05m/6-8.75 and the triple jump where he claimed 9^th place with a distance of 15.09m/49-6.25.

Sophomore Nate Collier landed on the podium for the men’s discus with a 5^th place throw of 57.75m/189-5 while senior AndrewWhite finished 9^th with a distance of 53.45m/175-4.

Senior Eugene Omalla ran in the 400 meters timed final where he claimed 5^th place in 45.76 seconds, his same finish from the indoor conference championship. Also on the track, sophomore Jourdin Edwards scored a point during the 400 meter hurdles with an 8^th place finish in 59.01 seconds.

As a team in the men’s relay, freshman Nen Matlock, senior Kyle Gale, E. Omalla and senior Jaimie Omalla captured 5^th place with a time of 3:05.90, three seconds ahead of sixth place Oklahoma State.

During the individual 400 meters, Matlock recorded his fastest time in 46.95 seconds in 16^th place and in the women’s race, sophomore Twaneise Johnson ran a new personal best of 54.15 seconds, finishing 14^th.

K-State will wait for the list of qualifiers set to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary on May 22-25 in Fayetteville, Ark. at John McConnell Field, hosted by Arkansas.
