EDINBURG, Texas (Kansas State Athletics) – K-State was able to channel a dominating defensive performance and a second half Kyler Goins goal into a 1-0 win over UTRGV on Thursday night at the UTRGV Soccer and Track Complex. The Wildcats improve to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Vaqueros fall to 0-3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
– In the 51st minute, sophomore Adah Anderson slotted a pass beyond the UTRGV backline. Goins used her speed to outrun the defense to collect the ball on the right side of the 18-yard box. After two dribbles, her shot pinged the bottom of the crossbar and deflected down past the goal line to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
– After the goal, the K-State defense did the rest. The Wildcats allowed just one shot on goal over the final 39 minutes of action to preserve the first win of the season.
– Junior goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer was awarded her sixth career win, as she made two saves on just three shots faced.

FROM THE HEAD COACH
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini
On the offensive attack…
“We definitely wanted to continue to work on being aggressive in the attack. I felt like we did a good job all game long as far as being aggressive. It’s tough to travel. Long day yesterday. We were a little sluggish at times. You can tell as the game went along with the heat here but our focus was getting the result and that is what we did.”
On Kyler Goins…
“She played a little bit more aggressive in the attack. We wanted her to isolate and take players on breaking the lines and getting to goal and creating opportunities offensively for herself or for her team. She did a good job tonight. Creating those chances. Unfortunately, we wish we would have had a little bit more go in the back of the net and find some more separation. But I mean, we got the win and that’s the key and that’s what we needed.
On the defensive play and shutout…
“We got the shutout we always preach about not conceding goals and they did that tonight. There was some interesting moments that we got caught in a pickle and we did a good job of rebounding and getting out of it.
On the team solving the UTRGV defense…
“They problem solved. I mean, you had a team that stayed really organized defensively. Their game plan was to kind of sit and counter us and we had to figure out ways to problem solve on our own. And that’s what they did tonight.”
