By Zach DeLoach

No matter how it looks, Jeff Mittie is not just mainlining Jolly Ranchers on the sideline.

The 11th-year Kansas State women’s basketball coach said he’s seen some fans speculating on social media about what it is he pops into his mouth every few minutes during games, perhaps suggesting he’s a compulsive snacker.

According to him, that’s not the case.

What he stashes on the scorers’ table behind him are cough drops. He doesn’t suck on them because he loves that sweet, sweet menthol flavor or because they help him manage stress during games.

No. 11 Kansas State women’s basketball star center Ayoka Lee left Sunday’s game against Arizona State with an apparent lower leg injury, and it doesn’t sound like she’ll be back soon.

Lee, the all-time leading scorer in program history, went off the court midway through the second quarter and appeared to limp on her way to the locker room, where she remained for the rest of the first half.

She didn’t return for the second.

“It’s not good, guys,” head coach Jeff Mittie said. “It’s not good. I don’t have a definitive update, but it’s not going to be a week or two.”

ST. Joseph, Mo. — After the No. 13 Kansas State women beat Middle Tennessee State 74-48 after a second-half blitz by the Wildcats on Saturday, Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Insell, a women’s basketball hall-of-famer, said he thinks K-State is one of the top squads in the country and that the Wildcats have a chance to go far in the NCAA Tournament.

“I’ve said this all along, and I’ve been doing this for 50 years: It’s not necessarily the best team that wins the national championship,” Insell said. “It’s the team that’s playing the best in that period of time. If Kansas State can put together a six-to-eight-game series there where they’re running their offense, playing their defense, switching it up, they’ve got a chance.”
