Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark told Kansas legislators on Monday that states should invest in their public universities because they are economic drivers.

Yormark spoke during meeting of the Joint Committee on Commerce at the Capitol. The meeting was an informational session that touched on recent changes that have changed the face of college athletics, including the player portal and revenue sharing, which involves universities paying athletes directly.

Kansas State is officially declining its bowl bid, athletics director Gene Taylor announced in a statement released Sunday morning.

“Following our recent coaching change and conversations with our player leadership and Commissioner (Brett) Yormark, I determined that we will not accept a bowl invitation on Sunday,” Taylor said in a statement. “This decision was not taken lightly, but with our coaching staff transition and several uncertainties regarding player availability, I felt it was not in our best interest to try to field a team that was not representative of Kansas State University.

Brigham Young University was the overwhelming pick in this week’s Big 12 power rankings ahead of Saturday’s showdown with Texas Tech in Lubbock.

The Cougars received 14 of 16 first-place votes from a panel of media who regularly cover the league, including Mercury sports editor Tim Everson. Texas Tech received the other two first-place votes.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark said Tuesday that he is in favor of expanding the NCAA Tournament and the College Football Playoff, though he remains cautious about exactly how two of college sports’ premier events will look in the future.

NCAA president Charlie Baker recently said that he supported the expansion of March Madness, which has included 68 teams since the 2011 edition. And while different numbers have been floated over the years, it appears that 72 or 76 teams with more “play-in” games could be on deck as soon as the 2027 tournament.

“That’s an NCAA decision,” Yormark said at Big 12’s annual women’s basketball media day, “but from a conference perspective, we’re in favor of modest expansion. Let’s use 76 as a working number — might not be the number, but a working number. But the right economics have to come with it.”

While expansion may not create much much additional revenue for conferences on the front end, since broadcast partners CBS and TNT have deals in place that run through the 2032 tournament, the additional teams would likely come from power leagues, and that could drive viewership and TV ratings for one of the NCAA’s signature events.

Big Ten counterpart Tony Petitti recently said coaches and athletic directors in his league have been “supportive” of expansion.

“I think there’s some momentum,” Yormark said. “We’ll see where it lands.”

The Big 12 commissioner also believes there is momentum for an expanded football playoff, which already has grown from four teams to 12 this past season. Yormark favors moving to 16 teams in a “5+11” model that would provide five automatic bids for the winners of the highest-ranked conferences and 11 at-large bids chosen by a committee.

Other leagues have floated other formats, though, and a subset of stakeholders believe 12 is already the right number.

“I’ve always said you have to earn it on the field. Nothing should be predetermined come the beginning of the season,” Yormark said. “If there was a conversation about a format that gave the power conferences the same number of (automatic qualifiers), I’d be all ears. I want to give our schools a chance each and every year to compete at the highest levels.”

In other news, Yormark said the Big 12 has no interest in private equity investment; the Big Ten recently backed off plans — for now — that would have called for a $2 billion investment in exchange for a 10% stake in its league-wide media rights.

The Big 12 had previously considered an investment from CVC Capital Partners to provide schools long-term financial security.

“It’s incumbent upon all commissioners to look at different options that they can bring back to their boards. Some of those options make sense, some don’t,” Yormark said. “We like where we are right now. That doesn’t mean we’re not exploring different options, but private equity for us doesn’t work. We’re bullish on our future. We’re not giving a stake to anyone. ”

Yormark also said the Big 12 supports the SCORE Act, a bill introduced in July that would preempt state laws regarding name, image and likeness payments that have been allowed since July 2021. Different states have different NIL rules, creating a “wild west” in college sports in which teams and conferences are forced to operate under different sets of rules.

The legislation also calls for schools to provide medical insurance to athletes after they leave school, among other things.

“At its core, the SCORE Act is about protecting the future of college sports for every athlete, every school and every college fan. It creates a national NIL standard,” Yormark said. “It protects a student-athlete’s rights to control their own name, image and likeness with a fair and transparent system. It expands scholarships, medical coverage, mental health resources and academic support. And it ensures student-athletes remain students, not employees.”

Mike Gundy, one of college football’s most colorful coaches over the last two decades, has been fired at Oklahoma State, according to multiple media reports.

The 58-year-old Gundy had a career record of 170-90 at his alma mater, where he was a star quarterback in the late 1980s. He posted winning records every season from 2006 to 2023, but had losing records in his final two years.

Oklahoma State did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gundy arrived as head coach in 2005, and the Oklahoma City native’s charm and sense of humor appealed to fans and recruits and helped the Cowboys compete with better-funded programs. As late billionaire T. Boone Pickens poured millions into the program, Gundy turned Oklahoma State into an unlikely powerhouse that often affected the national championship race. The Cowboys won the Big 12 in 2011 and played in the Big 12 title game in 2021 and 2023.

But the Cowboys couldn’t keep up as college football changed. The transfer portal and NIL made it more difficult for a coach who made his name mining diamonds in the rough. Gundy lost 11 of his final 12 games with the program. In his final two seasons, he emerged as a refreshingly open and honest voice about the changes in the sport.

For all his positives, Gundy came with quirks. He is known as much for his “I’m a man, I’m 40” rant that he made defending a player — a diatribe that remains a part of pop culture through a Consumer Cellular commercial — as for his success.

In 2020, he apologized for calling COVID-19 the “Chinese Virus, ” and again months later after he wore a T-shirt featuring the far-right One America News Network that created a disagreement with running back Chuba Hubbard.

All those things were forgiven as the team won. But the Cowboys lost their last nine games last season, the final defeat a 52-0 blowout at Colorado.

This season, Oklahoma State struggled out of the gate against FCS program Tennessee-Martin, winning 27-7 but raising eyebrows with its struggles after quarterback Hauss Hejny went down with a broken foot in the first quarter.

The next week, the Cowboys lost at Oregon 69-3. Ducks coach Dan Lanning said Gundy got his team fired up by talking about how much money Oregon had at its disposal.

After a bye week, the Cowboys lost at home to Tulsa for the first time since 1951.

On Monday, Gundy said he wanted to stay.

“Ever since I was hired, I’ve put my heart and soul into this, and I’ll continue to do that until I don’t want to do it anymore, or until someone else says we don’t want you to do it,” he said.

Oklahoma State hosts Baylor on Saturday.

IRVING, Texas (Big 12) – Beginning with the 2025-26 season, the Big 12 Conference will publicly provide player availability reports for all Conference games in football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball. Approved by all member institutions, the policy will include updates in the days leading up to each game, as well as a final report 90 minutes prior to kickoff or tip-off.

Big 12 football programs will be required to submit daily reports beginning three days before each game. Men’s and women’s basketball teams will update their availability reports the night before each contest.

All reports will be housed exclusively at Big12Sports.com. For football, student-athletes must be designated as available, probable, questionable, doubtful, or out. Basketball designations will include available, game-time decision, or out.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Another college basketball season in the books means another offseason to reset, recruit and reassess the growing needs of the game.

Following a yearlong experiment with a 20-game conference schedule, the Big 12 announced its intention to return to 18 games for the upcoming season.

Vice President of Big 12 Men’s Basketball Brian Thornton said Wednesday there were multiple reasons for the change.

“The schedule got very compressed and when you’re planning in a league as challenging as ours, understandably our coaches wanted a little bit of an opportunity during the course of conference play to take a deep breath, and going to 18 games allows that,” Thornton told The Associated Press at the Big 12 spring meetings. “It allows us to have a built-in bye, and it’s something that we feel is important for the time being.”

The transition to 18 games accommodates the requests of college coaches after complaints during the season. But the reason behind the shift goes beyond rest time and injury prevention.

“We want to maximize bids, we want to maximize seeds,” Thornton said. “The nonconference schedule is a huge component of that. We’re moving from 20 conference games to 18 conference games, and so we spent considerable time talking about the importance of replacing those games with quality games that allows our conference to continue to thrive.”

The Atlantic Coast Conference made the same move in early May after earning just four NCAA Tournament bids, its lowest total since 2013.

The Big 12 had seven bids in the tournament, the third-most behind the Big Ten (8) and SEC (14). Houston coach Kelvin Sampson, whose Cougars reached the national championship game, took notice.

“One of the great things but also great challenges of coaching in the Big 12 is that you’ve got to keep up,” Sampson said. “It’s competitive, you know. The SEC got 14 teams in the NCAA Tournament this year, we only had seven.”

Both the ACC and Big 12 hope the increased strength of schedule and strategic nonconference games lead to higher seeding, increased bids and more national attention.

“What our conference does during the nonconference schedule is really what sets the stage for how strong our conference is going to be overall,” Thornton said. “The ball games that we schedule, the success that we have during that time, will set the stage for if we’re viewed as the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 conference in the country as we go down the stretch and head into March Madness.”

(ESPN) – A Utah woman has alleged that BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff raped, strangled and bit her, and that she was encouraged by Provo police not to do anything after reporting it, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Utah state court.

The woman, identified in the lawsuit as Jane Doe A.G., alleges the assault took place at Retzlaff’s home in November 2023.

“A year and half after the rape and strangulation, Jane Doe A.G. continues to experience extreme post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma symptoms as she works to process what happened and move on,” the lawsuit states.

Retzlaff’s attorney, Mark Baute, said in a statement that his client is “factually innocent.”

“We look forward to proving that innocence,” Baute said. “Jake’s focus this year will be on football. We don’t try cases in the media, we will respect the process and establish Jake’s innocence through the judicial system.”

Email and phone calls to a spokesperson for the BYU athletic department and the Provo Police Department seeking comment were not immediately returned.

The lawsuit says the woman and Retzlaff connected through social media in October 2023 and messaged for a few weeks before he invited her to his place on or around Nov. 22. The woman and a friend arrived at Retzlaff’s home that night, where friends and teammates of Retzlaff were also present.

Later that evening, the woman’s friend left, after which Retzlaff and the woman started watching a movie, the lawsuit states.

“At some point they began to kiss, but Jane Doe A.G. did not want to do anything more,” the lawsuit states. “Retzlaff began escalating the situation … and Jane Doe A.G. tried to de-escalate the situation and attempted to slow things down, trying to pull away, and saying ‘wait.’ She did not want to do anything sexual with him.”

The lawsuit says the woman told Retlaff “no” and “wait, stop,” but he continued to force himself on her. After she tried to get up out of the bed, the lawsuit alleges, in graphic detail, that Retzlaff put his hands around her neck and proceeded to rape her.

“It hurt so bad and caused so much pain that Jane Doe A.G. passed out,” the lawsuit states. “Jane Doe A.G. remembers tears rolling down her face as she fought to breathe.”

The woman visited the hospital a few days later, where a rape kit was performed and pictures of her injuries were taken. The lawsuit says she was connected with Provo police but did not initially share Retzlaff’s name.

“At some point after speaking to the police, an officer reached out to her asking for the name because someone else filed a complaint against a football player and the police wanted to see if it was the same person,” the lawsuit said. “At that point Jane Doe A.G. shared Retzlaff’s name, and the Provo police then encouraged her not to do anything because, as they claimed, ‘sexual assault victims never get justice.’”

Retzlaff made four starts for BYU in November 2023, and he took over as the program’s starting quarterback for the 2024 season, serving as co-captain. He transferred to BYU from Riverside City College in Southern California.

Located in Surprise, Arizona, Surprise Stadium was recently ranked #1 in USA Today’s Best Spring Training Facility rankings.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (K-State Athletics) – For the fourth straight week, K-State baseball picked up a Big 12 Conference weekly award, as AJ Evasco was named the Newcomer of the Week on Monday afternoon.

The true freshman from Lincoln, Nebraska, becomes the third Wildcat to earn the honor this season, joining left-handed pitcher Lincoln Sheffield and shortstop Maximus Martin.

For the week, Evasco recorded a team-high 12 RBI and raised his batting average to .429, the third-best in the league and highest among all freshmen. His slugging percentage climbed to .796, ranking fourth overall in the conference.

Evasco drove in a team-leading eight RBI against Utah, helping K-State open Big 12 play with its first series sweep since 2010.  Evasco ended the weekend hitting .583 (7-for-12), compiling a 1.488 OPS with a double and home run.

In the series finale against Utah, Evasco went 3-for-4 and launched his fourth home run of the year – a walk-off three-run shot that sealed a run-rule victory and extended the Cats’ home winning streak to six.  It marked his second walk-off homer of the season, as the freshman belted a three-run homer in K-State’s 17-5 run-rule victory over William & Mary (March 8).

He blasted his first collegiate grand slam against Creighton, cutting a five-run deficit to one.

The Wildcats (12-7, 3-0 Big 12) will head to Stephenville, Texas for a midweek non-conference matchup against Tarleton State (9-12) on Wednesday, March 19. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Tarleton Baseball Complex. Kansas State senior forward David N’Guessan was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday afternoon after averaging 21 points in helping Kansas State to wins over Arizona State and No. 16 Kansas last week.

N’Guessan averaged 21.0 points on 70.8 percent (17-of-24) shooting, including 50 percent (1-of-2) from 3-point range, and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the free throw line to go with 7.5 rebounds in 34.4 minutes per game in victories over the Sun Devils and Jayhawks. He followed his season-high 22-point performance vs. ASU with a team-high 20 points vs. Kansas to post consecutive 20-point games for the first time in his career. He now has 4 career 20-point games.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — What happened in Vegas didn’t stay there for the Big 12 Conference, which is returning its football media days to Texas.

The Big 12 announced Wednesday that the preseason gathering of coaches and players from its 16 schools will be held July 8-9 at the Ford Center in Frisco, Texas. That is part of The Star complex that is the headquarters of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.

Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas hosted the event last year.

“Texas is the backyard of the Big 12 Conference,” said Scott Draper, the league’s chief football and competition officer.

AT&T Stadium, the Cowboys’ home stadium in Arlington where the Big 12 plays its championship game each season, was unavailable last summer and again this summer. Work is being done there outside the football season to prepare the venue for hosting World Cup games in 2026.

The Big 12 football media days were held in Frisco in 2017 and 2018. The event was moved to AT&T Stadium in 2019, and after no in-person gathering before the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, was there again from 2021-23.

A bad ending to the first half doomed the Kansas State men in a turnover-filled 79-66 loss at Oklahoma State on Tuesday in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

A big Oklahoma State run to close the first half put the Cowboys in control, leading 43-24 at the break.

That lead grew to as much as 21 midway through the second half, and the Wildcats (7-7, 1-2 Big 12) couldn’t get closer than 11 before the final buzzer.

Longtime K-State coach Dana Dimel passed away on Tuesday, according to his family. He was 62.

Dimel spent 20 years on the coaching staff at K-State under head coach Bill Snyder. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1987 following three seasons as an offensive linemen from 1984-86 with the Wildcats where he was an All-American.

He then moved to offensive line coach in 1989. Most recently, Dimel was an senior offensive assistant at Illinois under head coach Bret Bielema after spending the previous six seasons as the head coach at UTEP.

After leaving K-State in the mid-90s, Dimel was head coach at Wyoming and Houston for three seasons each from 1997-2002. He then returned to K-State in 2005 as a graduate assistant again and then in 2009 was named offensive coordinator for the second time under Snyder, remaining with the program until 2017.

In Manhattan, Dimel was instrumental in the four straight Top 20 finishes in the early-to-mid 90s as well as the team’s success in 2011 and 2012 under quarterback Collin Klein where the Wildcats went 21-5 and won the Big 12 championship in 2012 and made it to the Fiesta Bowl.

Dimel is survived by his wife Julie and his two children – Winston and Josey.

K-State, under third-year head coach Jerome Tang, has been picked to finish 8th in the 2024-25 Big 12 preseason coaches poll.

From the Big 12 media release, Kansas was selected as the favorite in the Big 12 men’s basketball preseason poll, marking the 20th time in 28 seasons the Jayhawks have sat atop the preseason poll.

The Jayhawks enter the season as the preseason favorite for the second consecutive year and were closely followed by Houston, who has ranked second in the preseason poll in both of its seasons in the Big 12. Iowa State, Baylor and Arizona rounded out the top five.

All awards were voted on by the league’s 16 head coaches, who could not vote for their own team or players.

CBS Sports and the Big 12 Conference have expanded their partnership by significantly increasing the number of Big 12 men’s college basketball games across the Network’s platforms. The multi-year deal, which runs through the 2026-27 season, is through a sublicense agreement with ESPN.

As part of its extensive regular-season schedule, CBS Sports already broadcasts a minimum of six Big 12 men’s college basketball games annually on CBS, with those games streaming live on Paramount+. This new agreement adds 20 games per year to air on CBS Sports Network to bring the total number of Big 12 men’s basketball games to at least 26 per season across CBS Sports platforms.

“CBS Sports continues to be the home for big-time college basketball and we are excited to expand our long-standing relationship with the Big 12,” said Dan Weinberg, Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Sports. “The Big 12 is one of the nation’s signature basketball conferences with marquee schools, student-athletes and coaches along with a rich history in the sport. CBS Sports has been the broadcast home of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament since 1982, including a partnership with TNT Sports since 2012.

The Minnesota Twins have selected Kansas State shortstop Kaelen Culpepper with the 21st overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

The All-American shortstop who batted to a .328 AVG with .933 OPS and 11 homers to go along with 59 RBIs this past season becomes the second player ever in K-State baseball history to be taken in the first round of the draft.

Jordan Wicks is the other one to be selected in the first round, being drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2021.

Culpepper was rated as the 31st best player by MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo and is the 11th player to be drafted under head coach Pete Hughes.

(Big 12) – In its debut season as a member of the Big 12, Utah was chosen to finish first in the Conference’s 2024 football preseason poll as voted on by media representatives.

The Utes claimed 20 first-place votes and totaled 906 points, edging out Kansas State in second with 19 first-place ballots and 889 points. Oklahoma State placed third with 14 first-place votes and 829 points after playing in the 2023 Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship. Kansas came in fourth with five first-place nods and 772 points while Arizona notched fifth with three first-place votes and 762 points.

K-State has landed the highest rated recruit in the program’s history in 5-star Goodland High School tight end Linkon Cure.

Cure made his announcement on Monday afternoon at Goodland High School with his mother and father by his side. Cure chose K-State over KU, Oregon and Texas A&M.

Cure is rated as the 26th best player in the Class of 2025 and the 2nd best tight end in the nation for the class. Cure will join fellow Kansans Avery Johnson and Dylan Edwards once he arrives in MHK next fall.

He joins Derby High cornerback Martel Jackson, Blue Valley linebacker Maguire Richman and Blue Valley Northwest offensive lineman Brock Heath as commits from Kansas for 2025.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State and women’s basketball coach Jeff Mittie have agreed to a new five-year contract through the 2028-29 season.

Wildcats athletic director Gene Taylor announced the deal Friday. The financial terms were not immediately available. Mittie’s previous contract, which was signed in 2022, would have lasted through the 2025-26 season.

Mittie has spent the past 10 seasons with the Wildcats, leading them to the postseason eight times while going 190-135 with four 20-win seasons. His best season may have been this past season, when Kansas State briefly ascended to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 and went on to finish 26-8 with a second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Colorado.

Kansas State returns four starters from that team this coming season, including All-American center Ayoka Lee.

Mittie arrived at Kansas State after spending 13 seasons at Big 12 rival TCU. He also coached at Missouri Western, which he led to the Division II Final Four, and Arkansas State, which he led to the women’s NIT. He is 644-370 overall.

K-State football has added another commitment to it’s Class of 2025 with four-star offensive lineman Brock Heath makng public his pledge to join the Cats.

The Blue Valley Northwest senior-to-be is the second offensive lineman to commit to the Cats, picking the squad over a number of Big 12 and Big 10 teams such as in-state rival KU and Iowa.

On3 ranks Heath as a four-star prospect as well as ESPN. On3 also rates him as the 8th best prospect in the state of Kansas.

He becomes the highest ranked in-state commit to date for K-State, with another four-star–Keiton Jones–and five-star tight end Linkon Cure still to make announcements.

K-State shortstop Kaelan Culpepper has been named to the D1Baseball All-American Second Team.

Culpepper becomes the first position player in school history to earn All-American status from the outlet, while he is the second Wildcat to be recognized in the Pete Hughes era.

Culpepper finished fifth in the Big 12 during the regular season in RBI, sixth in hits and led the conference in triples. With his 11 homers this year, he jumped to 10th all-time in school history, finishing with 26 during his career.

Culpepper also performed in the postseason, finishing with a .474 batting average, a .522 on-base percentage and a 1.053 slugging percentage with three doubles, one triple and two homers with 10 RBIs during the Cats run to the Super Regional.

The Big 12 is considering a private equity investment, something that has never been considered in the history of college athletics.

The conference is currently in discussions with a Luxemborg based equity firm CVC that could give the conference anywhere between $800 million to $1 billion in exchange for anywhere between 15 to 20 percent stake of the league with a portion of the money to the conference’s 16 teams.

The Big 12 currently earns about $31.7 million from media deals with Fox and ESPN that is set to expire in 2031. If a deal were to go through with CVC, the league would earning almost as much revenue as the Big 10 currently earns.

In a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Big 12 Conference is looking to sell its naming rights to a title sponsor that could generate the conference millions of dollars in revenue.

This commercial sponsor would potentially take the word “Big” out of the conference name and instead of go by the sponsor’s name. Sports Illustrated has further reported that the conference is looking at Allstate and other companies as a potential sponsor.

According to sources close to the story, the conference has been holding discussions on this potential idea for months and a decision could be coming in the near future. A deal like this could generate millions for member schools.

The Big 12 delved out over $470 million in revenue to member schools last year and a deal like this could generate even more money for the conference that is looking to move on into a new era following the departure of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC and the additions of Utah, Arizona, Arizona State and the re-entry of Colorado to the conference.

(Big 12) – The Big 12 along with its television partners ESPN and FOX Sports have announced early season and special date football selections across linear and digital platforms. The 2024 season marks the Big 12’s first as a 16-team league as it welcomes Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.

The season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 29 with four games before a single game Friday, Aug. 30 when TCU travels to Stanford in a power four matchup on ESPN. The remaining 11 opening week games will be played on Saturday, Aug. 31, highlighted by another power four game as West Virginia hosts Penn State in FOX’s Big Noon matchup with Big Noon Kickoff on-site to provide pregame coverage.

A full slate of non-conference games will continue in Week 2 with nine of the 16 against power four opponents. Weeks 2 and 3 will also include non-conference contests between Baylor and Utah along with Arizona and Kansas State to fulfill preexisting agreements. The first league outing will be played in Week 3 when UCF travels to TCU on Saturday, Sept. 14 for a prime-time matchup on FOX.

Times and television information are set for the Big 12’s additional six special date selections, which are all conference matchups and will be played on Fridays, including a “Black Friday” double-header as the regular season wraps up over Thanksgiving weekend.

The Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship will return to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas for the 10th year. The game is slated for Saturday, Dec. 7 on ABC. Last year’s contest totaled a championship game record attendance of 84,523.

The remainder of the season’s television selections will be announced on a 12-day or six-day notice via Big12Sports.com and the Conference’s official digital platforms.

K-State Athletics – The eyes of the nation will be on Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Friday, September 13, as FOX Sports has announced that Kansas State’s non-conference matchup with Arizona will kick off at 7 p.m. as the inaugural game of the new FOX College Football Friday television package.

This will be Kansas State’s first home weeknight game since playing on a Thursday night in 2015, while it is the Wildcats’ first Friday home game since 2013.

The non-conference matchup against new Big 12 foe Arizona is the first game of a previously scheduled non-conference series that was announced in 2016. It is the eighth meeting all-time between the two Wildcats but the first in Manhattan, and the schools have not met on the gridiron since a contest in Tucson in 1978.

Announced earlier this year, FOX College Football Friday is a dedicated primetime window showcasing elite college football Friday nights on FOX throughout the fall. The new package will lead off FOX Sports’ unrivaled weekend football lineup – followed by college football’s most-watched window, Big Noon Saturday.

The Wildcats enter the 2024 season with a current streak of three eight-plus win seasons, the only team in the Big 12 and one of only 11 Power 4 squads to claim that feat. They finished the 2023 campaign ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press Top 25, No. 19 in the AFCA Coaches Poll and No. 25 in the College Football Playoff Top 25 after registering a 9-4 record.

The NCAA announced a set of rule changes Thursday that will make college football similar to the NFL. Adding the two-minute warning and coach-to-player helmet communications at the FBS level. Also, sideline tablets will be permitted for all three NCAA divisions.

Like the NFL, the clock will stop with two minutes left in the 2nd and 4th quarters. The biggest adverse from fans about adding the two-minute warning to college football would be the possibility of TV adding an extra commercial to each half. According to multiple reports, adding extra commercials is not the plan.

Helmet communication rules will be very similar to the NFL. Only one player for each team will be permitted to be in communication with coaches while on the field. A green dot on the back of the helmet will be used to identify that player.

The communication from the coach to the player will be turned off with 15 seconds remaining on the play clock or when the ball is snapped, whichever comes first.

The rules committee had been moving toward coach-to-player communication in recent years, but it was slow to be implement because of concerns that not every school could afford to do it in an equitable way.

For K-State, using helmet communication is still a work in progress.

During last year’s bowl season, teams were permitted to experiment with helmet communication if both sides agreed to it. But no team was forced to use it and that will be the case going forward.

Teams can still chose to signal in plays.

Sign stealing during games is not illegal under NCAA rules, unless it is done with the use of electronic technology.

The NCAA investigated Michigan for using an elaborate impermissible in-person scouting scheme to aid its sign-stealing operation. That case is ongoing, but the Big Ten punished the school by suspending then-head coach Jim Harbaugh for the final three games of the regular season.

Michigan finished 15-0 and won the national championship.
