Bernat in Top 10 After First Round of NCAA Regional
BRYAN, Texas (K-State Athletics) – With a round of 1-under par 71 on Monday, Kansas State junior women’s golfer Carla Bernat is tied for sixth place at the 2024 NCAA Bryan Regional, held at the par-72, 6,376-yard Traditions Club.
Bernat carded one of just 11 under-par first rounds among the 66-player field as she put together her 17th round of under-par golf this season.
“Carla did a nice job today,” first-year head coach Stew Burke said. “She stuck to her plan well and didn’t get frustrated when a few birdie putts did not drop early. This was a very mature and patient round. She has herself in position, so all we can ask for is more of the same tomorrow.”
A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat put herself in an early hole with a bogey on No. 1, but, after three-straight pars, she got back to even with a birdie on the par-5 5th hole and then moved to 1-under par with a birdie on No. 8.
Bernat’s back 9 started with three pars before a bogey on No. 13 to drop to even par. She came down the home stretch with pars on Nos. 14, 15, 16 and 18 in addition to a birdie on the par-4 17th hole.
One of five players competing solely as an individual in the 54-hole event, Bernat leads that group of players by four shots as the next highest player competing as an individual is TCU’s Lois Lau at 3-over par 75. However, with the top five teams advancing from the Bryan Regional to the NCAA Championship, she is competing against 41 other players who are looking to qualify as an individual.
LSU and SMU are tied atop the team leaderboard at 2-under par 286, one shot ahead of host-school Texas A&M. LSU’s Ingrid Lindblad and Latanna Stone, along with SMU’s Mackenzie Lee, are tied for the 18-hole lead at 4-under par 68.
Bernat’s second round of the 2024 NCAA Bryan Regional begins Tuesday morning with a 9:40 a.m. tee time off hole No. 1. Live results can be followed at www.Golfstat.com.
