2022 K-State Soccer Season in Review

MANHATTAN, Kan. (Kansas State Athletics) – Kansas State soccer completed its seventh season of action and its sixth in Big 12 play in 2022.

• The Wildcats (6-10-3, 2-5-2 Big 12) tied the school record for wins in a season and collected eight points in the league standings to secure eighth place in the Big 12 standings and qualified for the 2022 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship for the first time in program history.
• K-State’s points leaders for the 2022 season were senior forward Kyler Goins with a career-high 12 points (5 goals, two assists), senior forward Caylee Thornhill with a career-high seven points (two goals and three assists) and sophomore Adah Anderson with six (one goal, four assists). Goins led the squad in goals scored and game-winning goals (2), while Anderson paced the team in assists.
• Freshman defender Jazmin Brown became the second Wildcat to claim Big 12 All-Freshman Team honors.
• In the classroom, K-State tallied a school record six College Sports Communicators Academic All-District VII honors as Aliyah El-Naggar, Bailey Nemechek, Caylee Thornhill, Maddie Weichel, Marisa Weichel and Alaina Werremeyer earned the honor.

Odds and Ends from the 2022 Season
• The Wildcats tied the school record for draws in a season (three), equaling the mark set in the 2016 season.
• K-State tied the school records for wins in the months of September (three) and October (two).
• The Wildcats tied the school record for road wins in a season (three).
• Kansas State collected two wins over NCAA RPI top-100 opponents – Yale (63) and Oklahoma (86).
• K-State set the school record for consecutive matches with a goal – eight.
• Kansas State tied the school record for goals from players entering a match off the bench with five.
• K-State reached the 100-goal mark as a program on September 1, 2022, at Weber State. Senior Marisa Weichel scored the 100th goal pushing the Wildcats to the mark in the 107th match in program history.
• Four Wildcats notched five or more total points this season, which is tied for second in program history for players with five or more points in a season (2017; 5).
• The 11 goals allowed in Big 12 play set the school record for the fewest goals surrendered in a Big 12 schedule.
• Defensively, K-State allowed 238 total shots which were the fewest in an 18-game season in program history.
• K-State allowed the lowest shot per game total, 12.5, in the program’s seven-season history. The Wildcats lowered their opponent shots per game average from 2021 by 1.6 shots (14.1 to 12.5).
• The Wildcats also set the school record for the fewest shots on goal per game allowed (5.5)
• Wildcat goalkeepers allowed 24 goals in 2022, the tied for the second-fewest goals allowed in a season since K-State played a full 18-match schedule in 2017.
• K-State tied for the second-most shutouts in a season with five. The Wildcats set the school record for scoreless halves in a season with 22.
• Junior goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer set a number of school records during the 2022 season including: career matches played in goal (42), career starts in goal (41), career minutes in goal (3,794:31), career wins (11), career saves (207), career shutouts (10) and tying the school record for wins in a season (6).
• Goins was the third player in program history to score five or more goals in a season and tied for third for goals in a single-season in school history.
• With her 12 points, Goins was the fourth player in school history to record 10 or more points in a season.
• Brown set the school record for minutes played in a freshman season with 1,476.
• Sophomore Riley Baker scored the latest regulation goal in program history, notching a penalty kick game-winner at 89:42 at Baylor on Oct. 9. Baker was just the second Wildcat to ever score on a penalty kick in program history.

Firing Range
• While setting the school record for consecutive games with a goal at eight, Kansas State pummelled the opposing net with shots – notching 236 attempts (12.4 shots per game).
• The 236 shots this season ranks tied for third in program history for a season. K-State’s 12.4 shots per game is fourth in school history for a season.
• K-State recorded 20 or more shots in a match three times this season, including 27 against Northern Colorado on Aug. 21.
• Kansas State set the school record for shots on goal in a Big 12 match, as the Wildcats registered 10 shots on goal at Iowa State on Sept. 22, 2022.
• The school record for total shots in a season is 276 set in 2019, while the shots per game mark stands at 15.3 also in 2019.

Better Late Than Never for K-State
• In its seven seasons of action, K-State has scored 64 of its 110 total goals in the second half or later of matches.
• Sophomore Riley Baker tallied the latest regulation game-winning goal in program history, as she scored on a penalty kick at 89:42 of the second half at Baylor on Oct. 9, 2022. It was the first game-winning goal of Baker’s career.
• Senior Kyler Goins recorded the eighth-latest goal in program history and the fifth-latest regulation goal in K-State soccer history with an 86:15 tally against Purdue on September 4, 2022.
• The Wildcats have scored 11 goals in the 85th minute or later in the history of the program. Of those 11 goals, four were game-winning goals (Brookelynn Entz, Colorado State, Sept. 17, 2017 [ot]; Adah Anderson, vs. North Alabama, Aug. 29, 2021; Caylee Thornhill, at Kansas, Sept. 30, 2021 [ot]; Riley Baker, at Baylor, Oct. 9, 2022) and two were game-tying goals (Aliyah El-Naggar, at Missouri, March 28, 2021; Laramie Hall, at Creighton, Sept. 2, 2016).
• During the 2022 season, K-State scored six of its 15 goals in the second half, including three in the 76th minute or later.

Game-Winning Goals for All
• Through 121 matches in program history, Kansas State has registered 32 victories. In those 32 wins, K-State has had 19 different players register a game-winning goal.
• The most recent addition to the game-winner list was sophomore Riley Baker. Baker is the first Wildcat to score a penalty kick game-winning goal for their first career game-winning goal, as she recorded a PK winner at 89:42 of the second half at Baylor on Oct. 9, 2022.
• Earlier this season, senior Kyler Goins recorded her first game-winner of the season at UTRGV on Aug. 25. Goins added a second game-winner against Colorado State on Sept. 15. She is tied for second in school history for game-winning goals in a season.
• Senior Marisa Weichel tallied the game-winner at Weber State on September 4. Weichel is tied for the K-State career record with Brookelynn Entz, as the pair each have four career game-winning goals. In the 2021 season, Marisa Weichel set a program record three game-winning goals.
• Of the 32 game-winning goals, nine have been scored by freshmen. The latest freshman to score a game-winning goal was Andra Mohler, who scored in the 38th minute against Yale on Sept. 9.
• On the current roster, eight Wildcats own at least one game-winning goal: Marisa Weichel, Goins, Caylee Thornhill, Shae Turner, Jesse Loren, Adah Anderson, Mohler and Baker.
• The first game-winning goal in program history was awarded to Abby Sieperda in the Wildcats’ 6-0 win at Oakland on August 26, 2016.

Cats Reach Century Mark For Goals
• K-State reached the 100-goals scored milestone as a program in its seventh season of action.
• The Wildcats reached the mark at Weber State in a 1-0 win on September 1, 2022, and was scored by Marisa Weichel.
• In its brief history, the Wildcats have seen 33 players register at least one career goal and the overall goal total stands at 110.
• K-State set the single-season record for goals with 20 in the 2021 season.
• In the 2022 season, the Wildcats have notched 15 goals (0.79 gpg). The 15 goals ranks tied for fourth in school history for goals in a season.

Happy Helpers
• K-State was helpful on its goals in 2021 and the Wildcats continued its generosity into the 2022 season.
• This season, K-State dished out 14 assists (0.74 apg) which were the third-most in a season in school history.
• K-State’s 14 assists this season have come from seven different players and are led by Adah Anderson (4) and Caylee Thornhill (3).
• Against Colorado State on September 15, 2022, Kansas State registered the second-highest assist total in a match as the Wildcats tallied five assists.
• In the 2021 season, the Wildcats set the single-season record for assists with 20 on their 20 goals. K-State had just three unassisted goals in the 2021 season.
• In its history, K-State has recorded 97 assists on its 110 goals and are averaging 0.80 per game.

Shot Prevention is Goal Prevention
• K-State’s 2022 version of the defensive backline has been one of the best defensive units in the seven seasons of the program.
• The Wildcats allowed 12.5 shots per game and 5.5 shots on goal per game.
• The 12.5 shots per game are 1.6 shots per game lower than the previous record season of 2021 at 14.1 per game.
• The 5.5 shots on goal allowed per game this season are 1.1 less than the previous record low of 6.6 shots on goal allowed per game in 2018.
• K-State’s 1.26 goals against average this season was the second-lowest in program history.

W for Werremeyer
• Junior goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer registered a strong 2022 season and stands atop the K-State career wins and shutouts lists.
• At Iowa State on Sept. 22, Werremeyer notched her 10th career shutout and fifth this season.
• The product of Blue Springs, Missouri, owns the program career records career matches played in goal (42), career starts in goal (41) and career minutes (3,794:31) in goal. She also owns the school record for career saves (207), career wins (11) and is tied for the top spot for shutouts (10).
• In the 2022 season, she has 18 starts with a record of 6-10-2 and a career-high five shutouts. Werremeyer collected 77 saves and a career-best save percentage of .770. She owns a goals against average of 1.29 and tallied a career-best streak of 295:34 consecutive shutout minutes from Sept. 4 to 18.

Goins With Goals
• Senior Kyler Goins paced the Wildcat attack in the 2022 season.
• Goins led K-State with five goals including two game-winning goals, 12 points, 52 shots and 21 shots on goal. Her 21 shots on goal are a new school record for shots on goal in a senior season. Goins ranked eighth in the Big 12 in shots.
• Goins was the third Wildcat in program history (Brookelynn Entz & Marisa Weichel) to score five or more goals in a season and tied for third in program history for goals scored in a season.
• Against Colorado State on Sept. 15, Goins achieved her first career multi-goal game and set new career-highs with two goals and five points in the 3-0 win.
• Her two goals against the Rams came in a span of two minutes and 26 seconds to set the school record for fastest consecutive goals by one player.
• During a two-game swing through Texas, Goins scored both of K-State’s goals. Against UTRGV, she tallied her first goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of her career with a 51st minute strike that bounced off the crossbar and into the net.
• At UTSA, Goins scored her second of the season and moved into the team lead for goals scored this season.
• This was the second time in her career in which she scored a goal in consecutive games, also doing so at Kansas on Sept. 30, 2021 and against West Virginia on Oct. 7, 2021.
• Goins added her third goal of the season and first home goal of 2022 with a marker against Purdue on September 4.
• In her K-State career, Goins ranks second in school history for career goals (10) and is second in program history for career goals per game (0.20). She also is second in school history for career points (23) and is second for career points per game (0.46).

Thornhill A Winner
• After a personal scoring drought, senior Caylee Thornhill has scored in consecutive matches for the first time in her career.
• Against Oklahoma on Oct. 16, Thornhill scored in the 81st minute which gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead before a late Oklahoma goal assigned winning status to Thornhill’s tally. The goal came on her 41st shot of the season and was her second career game-winner.
• Thornhill’s two career game-winning goals have come after the 80th minute, as she scored her first career game-winning goal at Kansas on Sept. 30, 2021, in the 99th minute (98:21). This was the latest goal in school history and the second overtime game-winner in program history.
• Against Kansas on Oct. 21, Thornhill scored in the 22nd minute on her 43rd shot of the season.
• This season, the product of Lenexa, Kansas, is second on the team in total shots with 44 and shots on goal (15). She owns two goals and three assists and is second on the team in points with 7.
• Her three assists are a new career season-high for assists including a career-high two assists against Colorado State on Sept. 15.
• Her three assists this season ranks tied for sixth in school history for a single season.
• In her career, Thornhill has five assists and ranks tied for sixth in school history. Her 13 career points ranks eighth in school history and her 27 shots on goal ranks sixth on the K-State career list.
• After two seasons halted by injury, Thornhill recorded her first two career goals and an assist in 2021 with 18 shots including eight on goal in a career-high 17 matches played.

Harlan Notches Second Goal
• Freshman forward Sophie Harlan closed the book on a solid debut 2022 season.
• Against Oklahoma on Oct. 16, Harlan registered her second goal of the season and her first Big 12 goal with a 43rd minute goal.
• Harlan was the first K-State freshman with two or more goals in their first season since the 2017 season (Brookelynn Entz and Hannah Davis) and the fifth overall.
• For her efforts, Harlan was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week on Oct. 18. She was the fourth Wildcat and the first field player since Entz in 2017 to earn the league’s weekly rookie honor.
• In the 2022 season, Harlan led K-State’s freshmen with five points (2 goals and 1 assist) and owned eight shots with five on goal.
• In the opening two matches of 2022, Harlan tallied a goal and an assist. She is the first freshman in program history to register a goal and an assist in the first two matches of a season.
• Harlan was the fourth freshman to record at least one point in the first two matches of a season, joining Katie Cramer (2016), Chloe Fisher (2018) and Kenzi Gillispie (2021).
• In the 6th minute of K-State’s season-opener against Northwestern on Aug. 18, Harlan used a backheel redirection of an Adah Anderson shot to score her first goal. Harlan is the second K-State freshman in program history to score a goal in a season-opener and the first since Katie Cramer scored in the first match in program history in 2016 at Saint Louis.
• Against Northern Colorado on Sunday, Harlan delivered a cross to Anderson in the 52nd minute which Anderson finished to give K-State a 1-0 lead.

Anderson Reaches Season-High
• Sophomore midfielder Adah Anderson wasted no time in 2022 in surpassing her point production from her freshman season in 2021.
• The product of Kansas City, Missouri, registered a goal and an assist for three points in the two opening weekend matches.
• Against Northwestern on Aug. 18, Anderson assisted on freshman Sophie Harlan’s goal in the sixth minute.
• Against Northern Colorado on Aug. 21, Anderson notched a goal in the 52nd minute on an assist from Harlan.
• At UTRGV on Aug. 25, Anderson assisted on the game-winning goal by Kyler Goins in the 52nd minute.
• With her four points, Anderson recorded at least one point in the first 3 matches of the season. This was the longest point streak by a Wildcat since Brookelynn Entz tallied a point in three straight matches from Oct. 3 to Oct. 18 of 2019.
• For the season, Anderson was third on the team in points (6) and leads in assists (4). Her four assists this season tied for third for assists in a single-season in school history and is tied for the school record for assists in a sophomore season (Tatum Wagner; 2016).
• In her career, Anderson owns two goals and five assists for nine points in 36 career matches. Anderson is tied for sixth in school history for career assists.

Jazmin on the Back Line
• Freshman centerback Jazmin Brown was a staple along the K-State backline in the 2022 season.
• Among field players, Brown was fourth on the team and first among freshmen in minutes played with 1,476 during her 19 matches played and 18 starts.
• Among freshmen in program history, Brown was the ninth freshmen to surpass the 1,000 minutes played mark and set the school record for minutes played in their debut season.

Nemechek Checks The Box
• Senior Bailey Nemechek found the back of the net for the first time in her K-State career with a tally against Colorado State on Sept. 15.
• She added to her scoring ledger with an assist on Caylee Thornhill’s game-winning goal against Oklahoma on Oct. 16.
• In her career, Nemechek is the eighth player in program history to play in 60 or more career matches and ranks fourth in school history for matches played (67) and is third for career starts (55). She owns a goal, three assists and five points as a Wildcat.

Baker the Goal Maker
• Sophomore Riley Baker put the Wildcats on her back with a career afternoon at Baylor on October 9, 2022.
• Against the Bears, Baker tallied her first career multi-goal match with two goals and career-highs of five shots and five shots on goal. She also notched her first career game-winning goal with her first career penalty kick with 18 seconds remaining.
• Baker scored her first goal of the season in the 30th minute against the Bears before adding the winner in the 90th minute.
• With her two goals against Baylor, Baker joined Brookelynn Entz (twice) as the only players in school history to score two goals in a Big 12 match. She is the second Wildcat with a multi-goal game this season, joining Kyler Goins (vs. Colorado State, Sept. 15, 2022).
• Baker tied the school record for shots on goal in a match and a Big 12 match with five. Her five shots and five on goal were both career-highs.
• Baker’s penalty kick goal was the fifth successful penalty kick in program history. This was the first penalty kick goal scored since Oct. 16, 2020, against Oklahoma. Baker is just the second Wildcat to ever score a penalty kick, joining Entz.
• This season, Baker established new career season-highs for matches played (17), goals (2), points (4) and shots on goal (9).
• In her career, Baker owns three career goals, one assist and seven points. She also has 30 career shots and 16 shots on goal (.533 SOG%).
